Introduction of Nitrous Oxide for Pain Management at OB/GYN Specialists of Tulsa

At OB/GYN Specialists of Tulsa, we are excited to offer our patients the option of using nitrous oxide for pain relief and anxiety management during gynecological procedures. This patient-controlled method can significantly enhance your comfort during in-office procedures.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” is a mixture of 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen administered through a mask. Traditionally used in dental practices, nitrous oxide is now available at our clinic to help manage pain during gynecological procedures and at St. John during your delivery experience, if desired. This safe and effective method has been in use for many years.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Patients self-administer nitrous oxide by holding their own mask and inhaling the gas mixture about 30 seconds before the procedure begins. You can continue to inhale as needed. The effects of nitrous oxide are quickly reversed as it is exhaled through the lungs, with the sensation dissipating within a few minutes .

once the mask is removed or as you breathe pure oxygen that we give you via the mask.

Patient Experience with Nitrous Oxide

While using nitrous oxide, some patients may feel drowsy, light-headed, or slightly euphoric. Our medical team will be present throughout the procedure to monitor and assist you. Any side effects usually subside quickly after you stop inhaling the gas.

Pain Relief Benefits

Nitrous oxide helps reduce anxiety and discomfort, making it easier to cope with pain during procedures. However, individual experiences may vary, and some patients may choose to discontinue its use if they find it ineffective or uncomfortable. Alternative pain management options are available if needed.

Potential Side Effects

Common side effects include mild nausea or dizziness. Our team can provide medication to alleviate nausea if necessary. Assistance will be available to ensure your safety when standing up after the procedure.

Contraindications for Nitrous Oxide Use

Nitrous oxide may not be suitable for patients who:

– Cannot hold their own mask

– Have a known vitamin B12 deficiency

– Have received narcotic medication within the past 2 hours

– Have specific medical conditions identified by their provider
